Primary Children's and Easter

When Wilson was 5 weeks old, Ruby and Seth got the flu.  A few days later, Wilson's eyes started to get really big eye boogers in them (about the size of a pinky nail).  So I took him into the dr. and they looked at his eyes, but they also got really worried cause he was running a fever of 101.3.  He was 38 days old and if they are 30 days or younger they have you go straight to Primary Children's.  But since he was a few days older I just needed to watch him.  If it got any higher or he got worse, then I was told to take him straight to Primary Children's.
We were getting ready to head up to Will's cabin for Easter weekend and Wilson's wasn't getting any warmer as long as he had tylenol.  So at 5 pm we loaded up the suburban and went to pick up Steve in Farmington.  I was in taking Ruby to the bathroom and Will came in and said that he felt like we needed to take Wilson's temperature again.  So I got him out and took it.  There is nothing scarier than watching that thermometer climb higher and higher.  It stopped at 102.9!  And I had given him tylenol an hour earlier.  I called the dr.'s office and they said to go to Primary Children's now.
We took Ruby and Seth back to our house so my parents could watch them.  My dad and Will gave Wilson a blessing and we rushed up to the hospital.  When we got there to check in at the ER there was a small line. There was a kid in front of us who was getting his temperature taken and he was at 102.2.  The nurse commented on it and said "Wow you have a whopping fever!" I started to freak out just a little.  Then when they tried to wake up Wilson, it took literally 45 seconds for him to respond to us gently shaking him.  I was really scared at this point and so was Will.  When they took us back, his temperature had dropped to 101.5.
The dr. came in and explained to us what they were going to do and why they were worried.  The started an IV and took some blood.  He said that it could be a virus or a bacterial infection or a urinary tract infection. He told us that he didn't want to do a spinal tap and they would avoid it if they could.  So they took his blood and did a catheter to make sure his urine was clean.  One of his blood tests came back high, showing that he was fighting off some kind of bacteria.  They started some antibiotics to help fight off whatever he had.  They ended up having to do the spinal tap and the dr. told me that I should leave.  Will stayed with him while I went out in the hall and cried.  It was now about 11 pm and his fever was 102.9 again.  The dr. said that his spinal fluid looked clear but that they wouldn't know for sure for a few hours if it was spinal meningitis.  They also explained that they weren't concerned about how high his fever was but they were concerned with how fast it jumped up.  Since his blood count was high and his fever had come back, they were having us stay for 36 hours to monitor him and to also give him 2 doses of antibiotics.
We were finally taken up at 1:30 am and checked in.  But then they came in to do a nose swab to test for the 13 most common viruses going around so it was about 2:30 before we finally got to sleep. There was only a small couch bed to sleep on, so me and Will squished together and slept as best as we could.  A team of dr.'s came in at about 7 am and they started to check him.  His fever finally broke about 9 am.  They continued to watch him and they kept us updated about his lab results.  They were watching to see if any bacteria grew on any of his samples and the spinal meningitis came back negative.  His 13 virus tests came back negative so they were now just watching his samples.  This day was my 28th birthday :) I would have loved to have spent it another way, but there was no better present than seeing Wilson get better!!!
Sunday was Easter. Wilson's labs showed that no bacteria had grown, so they started to get ready to discharge us. They never really figured out what he had, but they assume that it was the same flu bug our other 2 kids had.  His little body just couldn't fight it off. We were able to leave at about 11 and head up to Farmington to get our 2 older kids.
Will's parents had our kids at their house, so the Easter Bunny came there.  Wilson got a basket there and also at the hospital :) Ruby got some barbies, Seth got a motorcycle and Wilson got some formula.  They each got sidewalk chalk, a movie, a harmonica and some candy.   Will's mom had set a treasure hunt for the kids in our house.  They got to find their treasures when they woke up from their naps.  I then took the 2 older kids to my grandparents for an Easter egg hunt.
I am so grateful for a healthy baby boy and that we have a great hospital who could help him when I couldn't.  Thank you for all of your support and concern that weekend.  The text messages and facebook replies were so sweet.  We are so grateful for Wilson and that he is healthy once again!
